Funeral Poems

Farewell my friends  -  Gitinjali

It was beautiful as long as it lasted, the journey of my life.
I have no regrets whatsoever, save the pain I’ll leave behind.
Those dear hearts who love and care, and the ‘heavy with sleep’ ever moist eyes,
The smile in spite of a lump in the throat and the strings pulling at the heart and soul.
The strong arm that held me up when my own
 strength let me down,
Each morsel that I was fed with was full of love
At every turning of my life I came across good friends,
Friends who stood by me, even when the time raced me by.
Farewell, farewell my friends, I smile and bid you goodbye.
No, shed no tears, for I need them not, all I need is your smile.
If you feed sad, do think of me, for that’s what I’ll like
When you live in the hearts of those you love,
Remember, then, …….you never die.

Goulburns Grey Lagoons - James Dunn

Oh to be where dusk’s mantle falls
on the Goulburn’s grey lagoons
Where the curlew’s magic anthem calls
Just to sit, with rod in hand
Where the light shines on the bend
And to wish the wonders of the land
Would never have to end.
And when the cross like a fire hangs low
And the gums like phantoms gleam
The tired winds like waters flow
to a dream within a dream.

His Journey’s just begun    - Ellen Brenneman.

Don’t think of him as gone away...
His journey’s just begun;
life holds so many facets...
this earth is only one.

Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how he must be wishing
that we could know, today,
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched....
for nothing loved is ever lost.....
and he was loved so much.

After Glow ….author unknown

I’d like the memory of me
to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an after glow
of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo
whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve,
to dry before the sun
of happy memories
that I leave when life is done.

A Mother is ........ (author unknown)

Someone who cares when others care less........... Someone who encourages when others ridicule........Someone who defends when others condemn....... Someone with patience when others are impatient.......Someone who appreciates when others fail to notice.....Someone who gives security in a world of insecurity....Someone who is accepting when others reject.....A mother is a friend for all time, to cherish and protect, as her achievements will linger for generations...........

A Song - Christina Rosetti

When I am dead, my dearest, sing no sad songs for me,
Plant thou no roses at my head nor shady cypress tree.
Be the green grass above me, with showers and dew drops set,
And if thou wilt, remember, and if thou wilt, forget.
I shall not see the shadows, I shall not feel the rain,
I shall not hear the nightingale sing on as if in pain.
And dreaming through the twilight that doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember, and haply I may forget.

A Song of Living - Amelia Burr

Because I have loved life, I shall have no sorrow to die
I have sent up my gladness on wings,
to be lost in the blue of the sky
I have run and leaped with the rain,
I have taken the wind to my breast
My cheek like a drowsy child to the face of the earth
I have pressed.
Because I have loved life, I shall have no sorrow to die.

I have kissed young love on the lips,
I have heard his song to the end
I have struck my hand like a seal in the loyal hand of a friend
I have known the peace of heaven,
the comfort of work done well
I have longed for death in the darkness and risen alive out of hell|
Because I have loved life, I shall have no sorrow to die.

I give a share of my soul to the world,
when and where my course is run
I know that another shall finish the task
 I surely must leave undone
I know that no flower, nor flint was in
vain on the path I once did travel
But, I sipped nectar and wine when all
of life’s mysteries did slowly unravel
Because I have loved life, I shall have no sorrow to die.

Away - James Whitcomb Riley

I cannot say and I will not say
That she is dead, she is just away,
With a cheery smile and a wave of hand
She has wandered into an unknown land
And left us dreaming how very fair
Its needs must be, since she lingers there.
And you, oh you, who the wildest yearn
From the old time steps and the glad return
Think of her faring on, as dear,
in the love of there, as the love of here
Think of her still the same I say,
She is not dead, she is just away

Beautiful lives - Lucille Boesken
Beautiful faces are those that show
deep concern for another's woe.
Beautiful lips are those that speak words of
cheer to the sick and weak.
Beautiful hands are those that do heart-warming things the whole day through.
Beautiful minds are those that hold kindly thoughts
 for the young and old.
Beautiful eyes are those that see some good in humanity.
Beautiful lives are those that bless the lives of others
with happiness..

Epitaph for a Soldier - David McNicholl

Build me no monuments. Should my turn come,
please do not weep for me and waste your tears.
Write not my name on honour rolls of fame to
crumble with man's memory through the years.
Wear no dark clothes; speak in no saddened voice,
Seeking rare virtues which didn't exist.
I ask one thing - that in still, far-off days,
Someone who knew me should in their daily rounds,
Suddenly pause, caught by some sight or sound,
Some glance, some phrase, some trick of memory's ways
which brings me to mind, then I shall wait,
eager with hope, perhaps to hear -
"how great if he were with us still!"
And then at the end, all that I wish for is just -
"he was my friend!"

Bend in the Road - Helen Steiner Rice

When we feel we have nothing left to give and we are sure that the song has ended,
When our days seem over and the shadows fall and the darkness of night has descended.
Where can we go to find the strength to valiantly keep on trying,
Where can we find the hand that will dry the tears that the heart is crying?
There’s a place to go and that is to those
who are close, and dropping all pretence and pride
We can pour out our problems without restraint
and gain strength with them at our side.
And together we stand at life’s crossroads,
and view what we think is the end.
But we are told that there’s much bigger vision,
we are told that it’s only a bend.
For the road goes on and is smoother,
and the pause in the song is a rest.
And the part that’s unsung and unfinished, is the sweetest and richest and best.
So rest and relax and grow stronger, let go and let them share your load,
Your work is not finished or ended, you’ve just come to a "bend in the road".

Beyond the Rainbows - author unknown

Beyond the rainbows farthest end, there lies,
A land that’s always filled with love and light.
Where shadows never fall to dim the skies,
For in this lovely land, there is no night.
this Celestial place of joy and peace,
There is no time for space, no doubt and no fear.
For those who come to it,
All troubles cease.
